The Position

Roche Molecular Systems, Inc. seeks a Principal Scientist in its Pleasanton, California location.

Responsible for novel protein and enzyme design, visualization, and discovery; rapid and high-throughput expression and screening of protein and enzyme candidates for the development of novel in vitro diagnostic tests; and the design and development of in vitro diagnostic test using Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR) Cas technology. Develop novel and efficient oligo sequence design workflow for the development of novel Nucleic Acid Amplification Test (NAAT) on the Roche cobas Liat platform. Evaluate novel or external technologies which includes evaluation planning, test material organization, evaluation execution, data analysis, and report writing. Conduct cloning, fermentation, protein expression and purification to research and create diagnostics reagents for use in the Liat System. Use Ribonucleic acid (RNA) isolation, complementary deoxyribonucleic acid (cDNA) library construction, library amplification, genomic DNA isolation, random shotgun cloning, polymerase chain reaction, and molecular biology techniques to develop and test in vitro diagnostic assay tests. Use sequence analysis tools and library normalization and subtraction protocols to assist in determining specificity of in vitro diagnostic assay tests. Assist in transcription profiling and array-based technologies such as probe generation and hybridization. Record experimental methods, materials and results. Make detailed observations, analyze data, interpret results, and form conclusions. Integrate previous and current results to determine next experimental steps and the impact of long-range project goals. Present findings and serve as scientific subject matter resource for other departments. Responsible for literature and patent search for novel assay development. Use programming languages such as Python for data management, visualization, and analysis. Responsible for Contract Research Organization management. Up to 10% domestic and international travel, fully reimbursed. Telecommuting permitted up to 1 day per week. May supervise up to 0-2 Senior Scientists.

Education and experience required: Master's degree in Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, or related field and 3 years of experience as a Research Associate, Scientist, Scientific Manager/Director, or related role in the life science field

Alternative education and experience required: Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, or related field and 5 years of progressive, post-baccalaureate experience as a Research Associate, Scientist, Scientific Manager/Director, or related role in the life science field

Special Requirements: Must have:

3 years of academic or industry experience with:

  • cell-free protein synthesis
  • Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR) Cas technology
  • development of molecular Point-of-care diagnostic solutions
  • Python programming language
  • novel protein and enzyme design

6 months of academic or industry experience with:

  • JMP software for data analysis, data visualization, statistical analysis, and design of experiment
  • Ribosome binding site sequence optimization for use in cell-free protein synthesis applications

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location for this position of California is $152,208 to $175,968 per year. Actual pay within the range will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
