What's the role?
As the Assistant Director of Compensation, you will have a critical role in guiding clients on strategic compensation-related matters, including the design and implementation of function-based efforts while supporting enterprise-wide compensation programs. Fostering consultative partnerships with technology business functions and human resource business partners will be key in proactively identifying solutions for current and future needs. As a consultant in our compensation service delivery model, you will effectively bridge the gap between compensation and the business by also collaborating closely with the program owners responsible for compensation-related products available to the organization.
In this role, you will utilize your deep expertise in compensation to provide advice and support to leaders at all levels of the organization on a wide range of compensation matters including pay recommendations, policy interpretations, and job evaluations. By adapting to the unique requests of each business area and establishing yourself as a trusted partner, you will proactively identify effective solutions for your clients. Leveraging your creative and solution-oriented approach, ability to listen to client requests, and ability to anticipate needs, you will deliver impactful client-based solutions. It will be essential to keep in mind strategic corporate business objectives to ensure the enterprise's compensation programs are achieving intended outcomes.
Proficiency in analyzing trends and drawing insights from big data will support the compensation-related recommendations you provide during real-time conversations. Experience effectively using Workday Advanced Compensation as a practitioner, proficiency with Excel, and familiarity with Tableau are necessary as you dive into compensation and data analysis in this role.
You will have the freedom and accountability to determine the best course of action for both your clients and the enterprise. This flexibility allows you to influence decision-making through business insights, data, and being embedded in the business regularly.
*Desired work location for this role is at our home office in Milwaukee, WI (hybrid), however the team is also open to considering fully remote candidates.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Consultant for assigned business areas, leading compensation related projects, conducting research, implementing, and introducing new and enhanced compensation-related initiatives.
  • Designs, implements, and administers compensation programs.
  • Oversees the design and maintenance of the Workday system as it relates to compensation content and process.
  • Partners in the design, implementation, and administration of compensation programs unique to assigned business areas.
  • Partners with Law, Controller, Compliance, etc. on the analysis, interpretation, and recommendation of legal, regulatory, and finance/accounting provisions that impact the delivery of compensation programs within Northwestern Mutual.
  • Leads cross-functional compensation-related design projects and efforts when assigned.
  • Serves as subject matter expert to other compensation and HR professionals.


Bring Your Best! What this role needs:
Required :

  • Bachelor's degree in business, finance, human resources or equivalent degree.
  • Minimum of 8 years compensation experience to include demonstrated success designing, modifying and consulting on compensation programs, experience with multiple job evaluation methodologies, and knowledge of regulations and laws impacting compensation practices.
  • Strong business acumen to include knowledge in current and future practices, trends and information affecting the business and organization.
  • Diverse background supporting distinct business units as compensation professional.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply knowledge across complex business areas with exceptional analytical and mathematical skills.
  • Proven ability to build a strong rapport with people at all levels of the organization and influence without authority.
  • Excellent consulting skills to include business acumen, interpersonal skills and demonstrated application of specific consulting skills to include contracting, engagement, implementation and assessment.
  • Strong ability to consult in a cross functional environment at all levels within the organization.
  • Proven success in dealing with ambiguous situations and working independently.
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate among the various Human Resources disciplines.


Skills-Proficiency Level Required:

  • Advanced: Compensation Administration, Compensation Analysis, Compensation Communications, Compensation Programs, Incentive Plans
  • Intermediate: Compensation Strategies, Executive Compensation, Job Evaluations, Performance Management, Salary Surveys


Desired :

  • MBA in business or related field or CCP (Certified Compensation Professional) designation.
  • Leadership background in diversified business settings.
  • Experience in compensation consulting in Tech/Fintech environment or a Technology heavy industry.

Pay Range - Start:
$100,030.00
Pay Range - End:
$185,770.00
Northwestern Mutual pays on a geographic-specific salary structure and placement in the salary range for this position will be determined by a number of factors including the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; the scope, complexity as well as the cost of labor in the market; and other conditions of employment. At Northwestern Mutual, it is not typical for an in dividual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.
