Summary:
The St. Paul Pioneer Press is seeking an ambitious, proven journalist to report on local/school/county government and its intersection with us regular people. We're looking for a reporter with strong experience and a watchdog state of mind who will break news, explore questions and ideas of distinct interest to our St. Paul-area audience, deliver news our readers can't get anywhere else, concentrate on substance and experiment with form in ways that serve the readers we have, attract more and convert them into paying subscribers.
Join our experienced, collaborative local news team at Minnesota's oldest daily newspaper in the state capital of St. Paul on the Mississippi, in a diverse, literate, beautiful Twin Cities metro area distinguished by its hunger for news, its diverse population and economy and multitude of higher-education, arts and sports institutions, by its abundance of outdoors opportunities, civic involvement and hard work.
What you will do:
- Build relationships with a variety of people in the St. Paul area to inform and deepen your understanding of how the government bears on the lives of the people it represents
- Build relationships with our elected and appointed representatives based on your drive to deliver answers and context to our general audience
- Break news day to day and with longer-term enterprise; this requires juggling
- Understand and execute on our news strategy, using the various tools that support it
- Communicate and collaborate effectively with colleagues and supervisors
What you will bring:
- Reporting experience in a fast-paced news organization; editing experience is useful
- Proven ability to juggle enterprise reporting with daily deadlines
- Extensive training in the ethics and principles of journalism
- Knowledge of social media tools and ethics
- Proven ability to cut through thickets of bias -- including your own -- to get to substance and deliver fair-minded journalism
- Proven commitment to accuracy, attention to detail and deadlines
- A valid drivers license and ability to travel for reporting events
